Cedar Shake Siding

Choosing Cedar Siding For Your Home

When it comes to wood siding, one of the more popular types is cedar shake siding. The cedar can come either untreated, or stained or painted, depending on your preference. The untreated cedar wood siding will weather and look more rugged as time goes on, and the stained versions will need to have some upkeep in order to keep it looking nice. As with most types of wood siding, there is more maintenance than with most synthetic types of siding, so you have to be prepared to deal with this.

Although many people choose to get cedar shake siding, there are a lot of different versions of siding made with this type of wood. You can get shingles, lap siding, log siding, vertical siding, beveled siding, channel siding, clapboard siding, tongue and groove siding, wavy, rough sawn or ridge siding, for example. The company you choose to get your siding from will determine which options are available to you, as not all these styles are available from every company. You might have to search around a bit to find a company that sells the style you prefer.

Western red cedar siding is a particularly popular option, although there are other colors of cedar available as well. However, not everyone can afford the cost of installing cedar shake siding. For those who want the look of this type of siding without paying cedar siding prices, there are some imitation options made from vinyl siding, such as the Cedar Impressions Siding line from Certainteed. This type of imitation siding will also get rid of the higher maintenance needs of real cedar, and make installation less expensive and easier as well.

Cedar shake siding can be a great choice. It is environmentally friendly, and it can help to lessen the costs of heating and cooling your home. Since it has natural insecticide properties you don't even have to treat it to prevent insect damage like you would with many other types of wood siding. You do need to at least power wash it regularly, and, if stained or painted, redo the stain or paint every couple of years. However, many people find the maintenance worth the benefits.

My grandparent's house have cedar siding, it is very beautful to look at. It made the house look extremely homely and it can last quite a long time if you have been taking care of them, especially painting them right.
